Eng. Nicolas Gumbo – Chairman KSB

A central theme throughout the sessions was the transition toward data-driven, technology-enabled sugarcane farming. Presenters emphasized the growing role of artificial intelligence, advanced soil-monitoring systems, and smart mechanization tools in enhancing farm productivity, lowering production costs, and modernizing agricultural operations across the value chain.

In his keynote remarks, Chairman Hon. Nicholas Gumbo outlined the strategic direction needed to steer Kenya’s sugar sector toward global competitiveness. He emphasized the urgent imperative for the country to move from being a net importer of sugar to attaining self-sufficiency and ultimately becoming a net exporter. He reiterated that sustainable cane development remains the foundation of any successful transformation of the industry.

The Chairman further highlighted that the industry’s future lies not only in sucrose extraction but in unlocking the full economic potential of sugarcane through value addition and by-product diversification. He called for intensified focus on high-value opportunities such as ethanol production, compressed biogas (CBG) derived from press-mud, and a range of feed and industrial products.

By leveraging the full spectrum of commercial possibilities across the value chain, he noted, the industry can significantly boost profitability, stimulate industrial development, reduce dependence on imports, strengthen energy security, and advance the circular economy agenda. His address set a compelling tone for innovation, sustainability, and strategic reinvention across the sugar industry.
