Sugarcane growers are the backbone of the sugar value chain in Kenya. Due to the small holder nature of sugarcane farming, the need to form effective farmers’ organizations is necessary in order to optimize individual grower value through collective bargaining and representation. In this regard, the Government has identified the need to harmonize practices across various sugarcane growers’ institutions and to strengthen their capacity for self-regulation and mutual support within the Kenya Sugar Industry. Given the complex nature of sugarcane farming, contractual supply agreements, and the multiplicity of stakeholders involved, it is necessary to have a clear and consistent framework to guide the operations of farmers’ organizations.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock Development and the Kenya Sugar Board have developed a draft Operations Manual for Sugarcane Farmers’ Organizations, to serve as a guide for providing a standardized framework for governance, management and operational procedures of grower institutions.
To this end, the Board has organized for a one-day public consultation to deliberate and receive feedback on the draft Operations Manual for Sugarcane Farmers’ Organizations scheduled for Monday, 15th December, 2025 starting from 2.00 pm at the Kisumu Hotel.
