Public Notice: National Validation of Draft Procedures for Election of Grower Representatives to the Kenya Sugar Board
The Kenya Sugar Board, established under the Sugar Act No. 11 of 2024, is committed to enhancing representation and governance within the sugar industry. As part of fulfilling its mandate, Section 6(1) of the Act provides for five representatives elected by growers from each sugar catchment area to serve on the Board.
In alignment with this requirement, draft procedures for the election of grower representatives have been developed. These procedures outline the governance framework, eligibility criteria, nomination process, voting mechanisms, dispute resolution, and safeguards to ensure a transparent, fair, and inclusive election process.
Stakeholder Involvement and Public Participation
The draft procedures were subjected to extensive public participation, during which key stakeholders—including growers, millers, farmer associations, and county governments—offered valuable insights. These views have been carefully considered and incorporated to strengthen the electoral framework and promote legitimacy and confidence in the process.
National Validation Meeting
The Kenya Sugar Board now invites all stakeholders and interested parties to a National Validation Meeting of the revised draft procedures:
Venue: Best Western Hotel, Kisumu
Date: Wednesday, 16th April 2025
Time: 9:00 a.m.
The objective of this meeting is to validate the final version of the election procedures before formal adoption and implementation. This is a critical step in ensuring that all sugar growers across the country have equitable and structured representation in the Kenya Sugar Board.
Why This Matters
The election of grower representatives is not just a legal requirement—it is a strategic move to enhance grower participation in decision-making processes. The Kenya Sugar Board recognises the central role that growers play in the success of the sugar industry and is committed to giving them a strong and legitimate voice through democratic processes.
